Why Choose a safari in Zambia and Victoria Falls?

Zambia safari holidays - canoeing on Lower ZambeziHow to compare Zambia as a safari destination with its more famous neighbours? A Zambia safari has three distinct advantages.

  • First of all, the standard of guiding is uniformly high. The Zambia safari lodges are often run by visionary characters. They balance a passion for wild places with the fierce dedication of bush entrepreneurs. Every guide has to pass stringent guiding exams, especially the walking safari guides. Thus your guide’s all-round bush knowledge is notable.
  • Secondly, and unusually, you can enjoy both night drives and bush walks WITHIN the national parks of Zambia.
  • Finally there is a friendly service ethic which is pervasive throughout the Zambia safari industry.

Zambia for Honeymoons & Romance: Waterfalls, Wilderness & Wine by the Fire

Cape Town, Botswana and Victoria Falls ZambiaZambia may not be the first name that springs to mind for a honeymoon — and that’s exactly what makes it perfect. It’s a place for couples who want to do things differently. Picture this: sundowners on the banks of the Zambezi River, private bush dinners under a sky lit by stars. Checking out the elephants from the deck of your tented room, perhaps with a G&T in hand?

The lodges here are often small, owner-run and full of character. Many have just 4 to 6 rooms, offering the kind of privacy and personal service you’re looking for.

And then there’s Victoria Falls. Whether you want to swim to the edge of Devil’s Pool, take a helicopter ride over the mist, or simply toast each other while enjoying sundowners on the Zambezi, the Falls bring just the right mix of awe and adrenaline.

Bonus? While Zambia isn’t “cheap,” it’s usually more affordable than Botswana’s Okavango Delta lodges.

Getting to Zambia: Surprisingly Easy

Zambia safari holiday - leopard in a tree in South LuangwaZambia is relatively easy to get to with flights into Livingstone (for the Victoria Falls) from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Kruger International Airport. You can also fly into Lusaka from Johannesburg and Cape Town with Proflight.

Emirates & Quatar Airlines connects many Countries to Lusaka via their hub of Dubai or Quatar. (Thus avoiding the need for an overnight stay in Johannesburg.

Within Southern Africa, you can now fly from Nairobi in Kenya to Livingstone so it's easy to combine and an East African safari with seeing the Victoria Falls.

Within Zambia, there is only one way to travel and that’s by air. Victoria Falls and all the major National Parks are connected by scheduled “seat in charter” flights. So your safari fits seamlessly together.

Where to go in Zambia

When to visit Zambia

Summer Rains

Much of Zambia is effectively closed for safari visitors during the summer rainy season. As the seasonal camps are cut off due to the high water levels. However central South Luangwa is open. Here the vegetation is lush and green, animals are being born and birding is superb. November and December is not ideal for Victoria Falls, as the flow of water over the Falls is low. But as the summer rains continue, the flow increases dramatically.

Luangwa & Zambezi start to open up

Some of the camps start to open again in the Lower Zambezi but many of the remote bush camps in the Luangwa stay closed. The summer rains stop leave a lush and green landscape. It is traditionally the time of more reasonable safari prices in Zambia. The flow of water over the Victoria Falls is at its maximum which means exciting viewing experiences but not great photos as your camera can get soaked!

Dry season; Peak Game-viewing

Traditionally this is the best time to visit. During the dry season the bush is less dense, and the animals flock to the rivers for water. It’s also the best time to see Victoria Falls. Note that June is often a time of slightly lower safari prices in Zambia (compared to July & August) so it could be a good option if you are on a budget.

Heat and Humidity increase

Temperatures heat up quickly in September and October prior to the start of the summer rains. But still great for game-viewing. However the flow of water over the Victoria Falls is noticeably less. (Visit the Falls on the Zim side during this time.)Somewhere in November, the summer rains start. This heralds the end of the safari season in Zambia with most camps closing at the end of October or mid-November. Depending on specific locations, some camps remain open later.
